Everyone Active Raiders NIHL 2 will return to action when they take on London rivals Haringey Huskies this weekend, writes Jacob Ranson.

The new-look side will welcome Dan Sampson’s men to the Sapphire Ice & Leisure Centre on Saturday (5.15pm) for a clash that bolsters a lot of former team-mates and old club links.

The Romford-based club have captain Sam Roberts, forward Matt Brown and defenceman Rob Veares, who have all spent time playing at Alexandra Palace, mostly for the Racers, who are now defunct.

Meanwhile, the Huskies ranks boast former Romford juniors Ben Osborne, Stephen Woodford, Mark Robinson, Sam Park and Sebastian Downing.

Most of those making appearances for the Raiders or Romford’s other former Division Two sides (Fury and Spitfires) over the years – not forgetting goalie Harry Buckingham and Jack Lee – also spent time with the club in recent years.

General manager Lee Mercer also spent time with Romford Fury before moving back to north London.

Raiders captain Roberts feels with so many links between the two sides it should make the encounter a feisty one especially with both sides wanting the points.

“It’s always exciting playing an old club and lots of familiar faces, but it’s definitely one I want to take some points from,” he said.

“We’re prepared and focused, we had good training on Wednesday and have some good set-plays coming together.

“It will be a tough one as they’re a good team but hopefully it’s not as feisty as the Chelmsford game.”

Huskies coach Sampson is also looking forward to returning to his boyhood club and admits they will be an unknown quality.

“Raiders are new in this year so you can’t read too much into them, but for a few of the guys in our room, myself included, it’s going back to where we started,” he told the Huskies audioboom channel.

“It’s not quite Rom Valley Way, but we’re looking forward to going there, and hopefully we’ll come away with two points.”
