Camden's junior fencing team won bronze at the London Youth Games

Camden enjoyed a successful weekend at Europe’s largest annual junior sports event, the London Youth Games.

The borough’s youngsters won bronze in the junior fencing competition and battled through the qualifying rounds in the female squash event at Redbridge Leisure Centre.

The Camden fencing team was coached by British fencer Richard Kruse – a former London Youth Games competitor in the sport, and a three-time Olympian.

He saw the borough top their group with an impressive 45-10 win over Redbridge and an exciting 45-43 victory over Kensington and Chelsea.

Camden then saw off Hillingdon in the quarter-finals before losing to the eventual champions Haringey 45-35 in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the female squash team topped their qualifying group before seeing off the challenge of Bromley in the quarter-finals and can now look forward to competing at the finals at Crystal Palace on July 5.

Team manager Ivy Dieltens was delighted, stating: “It feels fantastic, really great considering last year we didn’t even make it through to the quarter-finals – so to actually make it through to the finals is really fantastic.

“Last year was the first year we ever entered a girls’ squash team to the London Youth Games so they are a year older, a year better, a year more experienced.”

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and is driving the legacy for increased participation in competitive sport and volunteering for young Londoners.

A record 126,897 young Londoners took part in the record-breaking 2014 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, taking the event to over one million participants since it first launched in 1977.
