Great Britain’s women were edged out by hosts Argentina in the first of their five-match series in Rosario.

The tourists gave GB debuts to eight members of their squad, including Havering’s Emily Defroand, Amy Costello, Rose Thomas, Nikki Cochrane, Anna Toman, Hannah Martin, Ellie Rayer and Jo Hunter.

And they took the lead in the first quarter as Olympic gold medalist Susannah Townsend netted on her first GB appearance since the 2016 Rio Games.

Maria Campoy got Argentina back on level terms, though, and Eugenia Trinchinetti netted their winner, but GB coach Danny Kerry was pleased with his side’s efforts.

He said: “Overlal we are pleased with our performance. Amy Costello had an assured first cap and Sarah Robertson gave a hard-working and intelligent performance.

“We have targeted some areas and as a coaching staff we cannot ask more in terms of the application shown from the athletes.

“As we become more acclimatised to the Argentinean summer, we will be able to bring even more energy to our play.”

The second match between the two sides is due to take play at 9.30pm (BST) on Sunday.

GB: Cochrane, Shipperley, Pearne-Webb, Unsworth, Haycroft, Townsend, Robertson, Rayer, Ansley, Watton, White. Subs: Toman, Martin, Defroand, Bray, Hunter, Costello.
