Swiss Cottage-based Highbury Korfball Club secured their first back-to-back victories of the season with a 25-12 thumping of lowly Nomads III, moving up to fourth place in the London Regional League.

Ana Rocha and Mirelle Geervliet each hit five as the visiting Reds home to their biggest winning margin of the season.

Highbury raced out of the blocks, attacking with verve and style and taking an early six-goal lead. Geervliet was on form and started the Highbury goal-scoring bonanza with two goals, while Jean Ayres bagged the next before Rocha got in on the act.

Geervliet completed her hat-trick in only the 12th minute with a long-range effort and Rennan Fonseca grabbed the sixth.

Nomads finally got themselves on the scoresheet quickly struck again to bring the gap down to four.

But Geervliet, Leonie Ansems De Vries and Ayres ensured Highbury headed towards the interval with a sizable lead and, despite a mini two-goal revival from Nomads, De Vries was on target again to send Highbury into the break 10-4 up.

Nomads got back within five goals just after the restart but Rocha calmed the away side’s nerves with a crucial goal from the back of the court. Nomads struck twice more, sandwiching Fonseca’s effort, to get within five goals again, but that was as close as they got.

Niccola Hyslop joined the party and Geervliet and Rocha got on the scoresheet again to extend Highbury’s lead. There were a further 11 goals from the visitors in the last 15 minutes, including four from captain Moses Hutchinson-Pascal and three from Rocha. Hyslop, Fonseca, Alun Perkins and Darryl Light also hit the target.

Nomads did hit five goals of their own among Highbury’s efforts in the final frantic period, but the game well and truly belonged to the away side.

Highbury now have a week off before a clash with Cambridge Tigers on Sunday February 15.
