Highbury Korfball Club produced a dominant display, beating Croydon II 19-9 in the London Regional League to put last week’s defeat behind them.

Swiss Cottage-based Highbury took the lead early on in the match and never looked back, with all eight of their stating line-up getting on the scoresheet.

Niccola Hyslop and Ana Rocha both struck four goals and Mirelle Geervliet netted a hat-trick to see the home side comfortably home.

Despite the dominant display that was to come for the hosts, it was Croydon who took the lead in the early exchanges. Rocha equalised for Highbury, only to see Croydon take the lead once more.

Rennan Fonseca scored from close range for Highbury to level things up, and the home side then took the lead through Jean Ayres, who scored the rebound after Hyslop missed a penalty.

Ayres was next on the scoresheet, closely followed by Fonseca, which put Highbury firmly in the ascendancy – and they did not let a Croydon goal disrupt their play as Matthew Dodds hit straight back and Hyslop extended the lead from the penalty spot.

Croydon responded to bring themselves back within three goals with a well-taken effort and Highbury captain Moses Hutchinson-Pascal then uncharacteristically missed a penalty. But Leonie Ansems de Vries ensured that Croydon were not let off for long and Highbury went into the break with a four-goal lead at 8-4.

The second half continued in the same vein with Ana Rocha and Hyslop getting on the scoresheet to increase the advantage. Croydon got one back, but Geervliet converted a free pass to restore Highbury’s six-goal lead and, although Croydon briefly narrowed the deficit again, Ayres, Geervliet and Rocha were all on target in succession.

Hyslop and Hutchinson-Pascal converted penalties, and Rocha and Geervliet then struck Highbury’s 18th and 19th goals. There was still time for Croydon to grab three late consolation goals, but that didn’t take anything away from a very satisfactory win.

Highbury, who now sit in fourth place, are up against third-bottom Nomads III on Sunday, hoping to gain back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
