Haringey Huskies have decided to don a pink jersey throughout the month of January to support cancer sufferer Claire Flatt.

Claire, 34, who is a big ice hockey fan and a practicing nurse was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August as well as breast cancer just shortly after.

She started treatment in September and has a mastectomy scheduled for this month, with more chemotherapy to come in January.

Claire has had to travel hours to get the treatment she needs.

It has been thanks to her caring husband Ian and their dog Pickles that she has made it through her darkest days, and also through the generosity and kindness of those who have wanted to help.

A club statement said: “Ice Hockey is a sport where the players go into battle every week, putting their bodies on the line out of choice. They choose this.

The players make a conscious decision to step onto the ice.

“Many a hockey fan has described this as brave, but not a single player that has donned the black, white and grey this season is as brave as Claire Flatt.

“Bravery is defined as courageous behaviour or character, and those who are truly brave are those take the fight head on when forced into a position of adversity.

“Those who do not back down. Those who do not give up.”

An outpouring of offers to help, and those of good character offering a hand when most needed, spurred Claire on to set up #ClairesChallenge to draw something positive from a year that been filled with tragedy.

Marathons, bake sales and charity nights have all been arranged, and now it is the Huskies turn.

Claire is a close friend of Jess Partington, Lee Mercer’s partner, so, during the month of January the boys will be wearing these wonderful pink jerseys in all of their games.

Once all of our January fixtures have been completed the jerseys will be going to auction.

The club added: “Thanks to some very kind sponsors Blockchain Beginners, The Book of Everyone and The Starting Gate pub, every single penny from the sale of the jerseys will be going to Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Care. “

Please keep an eye on #ClairesChallenge as she has some of her own planned for the road of recovery, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with her husband and cycling from London to Paris.
