Haringey Aquatics’ Under-13 boys relay team took pride of place in the London Region Arena League, winning every race in which they competed over three months.
Their results drove the club to a sixth-place finish in the 16-team Division One in the London region – the best position the club has ever achieved.
The final round was held at Becontree Leisure Centre on December 12. Alex Vonckx, Max Hanson, Renat Samur and Shakil Giordani were victorious in the freestyle and medley relays during the three rounds of the Arena League in Division One. They also won 11 of the 12 individual events.
Their performances delivered important points for the team against some of the top teams in London. Alex, Renat and Shakil continued that success in their 100m events, winning convincingly against strong competition in the backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly competitions.
Praising the strong performance, coach Paul Doyle said: “This is a remarkable achievement by the swimmers and the club when you realise that for the last 18 months we have had to deal with two pool closures. But the swimmers rose to the challenge and became the stronger for it.”
These accomplishments are not just limited to the recent Arena League victories. Throughout last month Haringey Aquatics swimmers broke almost 250 club records, a 40 per cent increase from 2014.
They are now focusing on the upcoming Middlesex ASA County Championships in January – and there are high hopes that a record number of swimmers will qualify.
Haringey Aquatics is a multi-disciplinary club that offers swimming, diving, and water polo training in three pool locations in Haringey.
