Football: University College School have become Independent Schools London Cup champions for the first time in their history after twice coming from behind to beat Westminster 3-2 after extra-time.
UCS appeared to be heading for a 1-0 defeat at Wingate & Finchley FC, but Joshua Dreyfuss equalised late in normal time and, although Westminster also took the lead in extra-time, Billy Bruce levelled again before George Goldberg hit the winner.
The first half was an even affair, but Westminster broke the deadlock with a bicycle kick from captain Oliver Isilin, just before the interval.
UCS came out all guns blazing after the break but, despite an improved second half with plenty of attacking intent, a goal never seemed likely.
Then, with defeat just minutes away, striker Dreyfuss scored a dramatic equaliser, guiding a fierce shot into the bottom corner.
Westminster, who were worthy finalists, took the lead again in extra-time when a quick counter-attack resulted in a well-executed finish past goalkeeper Sol Schlagman.
However, UCS showed real character to responded immediately, with Bruce’s powerful strike deflecting off an outstretched Westminster leg before finding the net.
A penalty shoot-out was now looming, but a clever UCS free-kick saw the ball slipped down the outside of the wall, and Goldberg slotted into the net to trigger exuberant celebrations.
UCS’ head of football Greg Thurstans said: “The boys are now reaping the benefits from training hard over the past three years, and they fully deserve it.
“We have been ranked as high as second nationally this season by schools sports, which is an exceptional achievement for a school that only plays one term of football and is considered more of an academic stronghold.
“What is even more exciting is that most of the boys have another year left at the school, so next season promises to be potentially even more successful.”
UCS squad: Sol Schlagman, Julian Meir, Serag Elmeleigy, Sam Taylor, Kai Biegun, Teddie Levenfiche, Zac Case, Eli Wegrzyn, Leo Ackerman, Dominik Nilsson, George Goldberg, Joshua Dreyfuss, Anthony Meir, Billy Bruce, Dominic Feldman.
