Wingate & Finchley blogger Simon Swingler looks back on Saturday’s unfortunate 1-0 defeat to Bognos Regis Town in the Ryman League Premier Division.

Last season the travelling hordes from Finchley descended upon the seaside town of Bognor Regis for our last big away trip of the season in fancy dress. Such fun was had by all that day that we decided to make this an annual event.

Luckily the fixture list once again threw up Bognor for our final big away trip of this season and, once again, the good people of Bognor Regis were subjected to an array of random outfits of varying quality.

The highlight of the extra-curricular activities was the fascinating sight of the club chairman conversing happily with Spiderman - an event that the chairman described on twitter as something that could only happen at Wingate!

Following some disappointing performances recently, The Blue Gods put in a decent shift away at promotion-chasing Town.

The first half was an even affair and with the news that East Thurrock were losing away at Leiston, a point at Bognor would have been more than helpful.

The second period was much more open and we fashioned more than one opportunity to secure maximum points, with the Bognor custodian having to be at his best to tip over a drive from Josh Kennett.

Our best chance of the game arrived when Kennett sent over a superb ball, putting Ahmet Rifat through one on one – but he hit a rather tame effort straight into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper.

Wingate were now in the ascendancy and Bognor were on the ropes. Leon Fisher was clearly taken down for one of the more obvious penalty decisions you’ll ever see but, despite being ideally positioned, the referee amazingly waved play on.

The next time the play was at the other end, the Bognor keeper turned to us, blew his cheeks out and said “definite penalty”.

There is an old adage in football that, when you are down the bottom, Lady Luck forgets about you - and so it transpired.

A cross into the box by a Bognor winger was adjudged to have been handled by Kieron Street and, on this occasion, the referee pointed to the spot. Ex-Portsmouth midfielder Sammy Igoe duly scored from the spot to hand us an undeserved 1-0 defeat.
