After a spectacular 2017, Harry Kane is looking to torment more defenders in the New Year with Tottenham Hotspur.

The first task for Spurs and their in-form forward will be earning more success away to struggling Swansea City on Tuesday (January 2, 7.45pm kick-off).

Tottenham have played their last match of this year after their scheduled fixture at home to West Ham United for the weekend of December 30 was moved back to Thursday January 4.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men signed off 2017 in style with a 5-2 thrashing against Southampton on Boxing Day at Wembley.

Kane netted a hat-trick to move onto 39 league goals for the calendar year and beat Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record of 36 back in 1995.

“It was hard not to think about it going into the game being level. As always I wanted to win the match first and foremost, but of course I wanted to score as a striker,” he told Sky Sports.

“To get that goal early on and get that record was a great feeling and I could enjoy the rest of it.

“This year I would say physically I have improved, recovery from games, getting ready, we have such a busy schedule. Just making sure I’m ready for each game, eating right, recovering right with ice baths.

“I feel really good. I feel sharp and at my best. Just getting more experience should make me a better player anyway.”

A better version of the Kane we are seeing now is a scary thought for most, but a tantalising prospect for Spurs and their loyal supporters.

The feats of the England international during the past 12 months have been astonishing and for him to end the year with back-to-back hat-tricks highlights his continued hunger for goals.

On February 24 it will be a decade since Tottenham last won a major competition – the League Cup thanks to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea following extra-time.

For Pochettino, Spurs and Kane to go to the next level, the club needs to end its quest for some type of silverware.

Both the Tottenham manager and the 24-year-old forward have already written their names into the Lilywhites folklore, but lifting a trophy in 2018 would firmly put them high up in the history books of the north Londoners.

If that is to happen, Kane will have to continue his goalscoring feats and you wouldn’t bet against that occurring in the New Year!
