Harry Kane became the club’s record goalscorer in the Premier League today and only needs 15 more goals this season to break the record number scored in a single Premier League campaign

Mauricio Pochettino backed Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane to break the record amount of goals scored in a Premier League season following his brace during this evening’s 4-0 win over Everton.

Heung-min Son opened the scoring for Spurs in the 26th minute at Wembley Stadium and it stayed 1-0 at the break.

Kane then took over, tapping home a Son centre before he scored a scruffy second after some poor Everton defending following an Eric Dier cross.

The second effort took Kane onto 98 Premier League goals for Tottenham – putting him past Teddy Sheringham and making him the club’s record goalscorer in the league format which started in 1992.

Now the 24-year-old will have his sights set on the record held jointly by Andy Cole (Newcastle United, 1993/94) and Alan Shearer (Blackburn Rovers, 1994/95) of 34 goals during a single campaign.

Pochettino said: “He is fantastic and he deserves all the credit and all the praise, so I want to congratulate him one more time.”

He continued: “There are a lot of numbers, but he can do everything because of his mentality and how he is – he is so professional.

“Harry can achieve all that he wishes to and all he wants to because it is unbelievable the way he is able to work and his willingness.

“He is always thinking ‘improve, improve, improve and how to score goals and to improve the team’ because his mentality is always collective and that is so important to explain to people.

“Yes, he has scored a lot of goals, but his mentality is to help the team, to work for the team and that is why he is a special player because not only is he a player with talent who scores goals, but in his mind it is always to help collectively.”

After Kane’s second, a scuffed effort into the ground from close range which deceived Jordan Pickford, there was still time for a stunning fourth from the hosts.

Serge Aurier, Kane, Son and Dele Alli were involved before Christian Eriksen drilled in from 16-yards to provide the cherry on top of a fine performance.

If Tottenham had scored one more during the final nine minutes they would have gone ahead of Liverpool into fourth place.

But it wasn’t to be, Pochettino said: “We tried to score more and more goals because that is our mentality, but it was impossible to score one more.

“All of the players on the pitch were trying to score and win and if we can score one, we want two and then three and then four, but I think we are now in the same position as Liverpool. Yet, today is not important because there are a lot of games to play.”
