Rumours of Brad Friedel moving to Blackburn Rovers have been greatly exaggerated, according to the goalkeeper.

Tottenham manager this week gave the 41-year-old goalkeeper his full backing and said he had no intention of letting him leave White Hart Lane after the club rebuffed a bid from the Lancashire side that the American spent eight years at.

The stopper was restored to the side - after a month playing second fiddle to Frenchman Hugo Lloris - for last night’s 3-1 win over Panathinaikos that saw Spurs qualify for the Europa League knockout stages.

Asked afterwards whether a switch back to Ewood Park is on the cards, the veteran said: “I have no idea. Apparently I was contemplating doing a medical but I was at home having Thanksgiving dinner with my family.”

He added: “What happens between club and club, a lot of the time, players don’t know.

“At the end of the day I’m contracted to Tottenham and I’m concentrating on Tottenham.

“Whatever role they through at me I’ll do it to the best of my capabilities, that’s all I can say on it.”

Pressed on whether he would consider leaving the north Londoners in the January transfer window, Friedel said: “I can’t answer that question. It’s all hypothetical. Right now I’m a Tottenham player and I’m very happy here.”

The American also insisted that there is no goalkeeping rivalry between Lloris and him.

“[At] every club, for 21 seasons, there’s been competition for places in every position,” he said.

“I said before that when I signed here it was a two-year contract. I figured I would play last year but this year was an unknown.

“They’ve [Spurs] been on the lookout for a long term, number one goalkeeper for a couple of years.

“We also have two other outstanding goalkeepers at the club in [Heurelho] Gomez and [Carlo] Cudicini, so [there’s] competition for places, yes.

“The club is going to be around a lot longer that any of us standing here, so they have to get all their ducks in a row.

“This club wants to be in the Champions League, they want to be there every single year and they want to try to be winning trophies all the time, so they continuously have to buy good players at every position.

“Do I thrive on competition? Absolutely, or I wouldn’t play football and I definitely wouldn’t be playing it at the age of 41.”
