A strong Tottenham side progressed to the knockout rounds of the Europa League with a 3-1 win at home to Panathinaikos last night and in doing so Brad Friedel believes manager Andre Villas-Boas has underlined his desire to win the competition.

The Portuguese guided Porto to glory in the tournament in 2010 and has previously said that he would like to do so again with Spurs.

The second class European trophy was not highly prized by under former boss Harry Redknapp last term and they went out at the group stage, which included a defeat to the Greek side they disposed of last night.

But needing just a point to progress in their final Group J game, Villas-Boas’ in-form north Londoners made sure with three as Emmanuel Adebayor, Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe all found the target.

It saw Tottenham qualify for round of the last 32, finishing second place in their pool behind Serie A side Lazio, having drawn four games and won two.

“This competition is different from last year to this year, that’s for certain,” Friedel said, adding: “This year, he [Villas-Boas] wants to win it. I think you can tell by the team selection.

“Every time we put a very strong team on the pitch and he’s not minced his words at all – he wants to try to win the competition, so we are going to take it very seriously.”
