Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood insists that Roberto Soldado is working hard to find the goal trail in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old Spaniard has scored five Premier League goals this season, with all but one coming from the penalty spot.

And Sherwood believes that the striker, who moved to Spurs for £26million in the summer, needs a freak goal to retun to form.

He said: “He is a confident lad when it comes to scoring goals, and scoring goals is something he has done all is career.

“All strikers have barren spells. I’m sure one goal will open the floodgates.

“There isn’t a striker in the game who hasn’t gone through a lean spell at some time or other, but he is a top lad who trains really well and it won’t be long before something falls his way.

“One will come off his backside, and it will turn it all around. That’s what happens for strikers, it’s a confidence thing.”

Soldado’s career, up until this season, has been in La Liga and has found the need to adapt his game for the top flight in England.

And Sherwood insisted that he is not worried by the lack of goals, with his last one coming against Stoke on December 29.

“He is trying really hard, and I’ve no worries about him,” the Spurs boss added.

“I am quite sure he is not worried by what other people think of him. He’s got to be professional in these situations and get on with his job, and that’s what he is doing.

“To be fair, when you arrive from another country and a different league, it takes a while to get used to.

“But I am confident he can be a striker for Tottenham for many years and score loads of goals.”

Soldado was not the only 28-year-old Spanish striker to move to the Premier League this season with Alvaro Negredo moving to Manchester City for £20m.

The former Sevilla man has scored 23 goals in 33 appearances for the Citizens so far this campaign and is a candidate for signing of the season.

But Sherwood, who described City as ‘on a different planet’ after they beat Spurs 5-1 on Wednesday, felt it was an unfair comparison.

He explained: “He’s been playing for Man City, hasn’t he? So it’s not a level playing field.”

Soldado’s troubles have been less felt given the form of Emmanuel Adebayor since he returned to the team.

The Togolese striker, who is renowned as an individual, has scored six goals in the 10 games he’s played under Sherwood, who paid tribute to the unique way he trains.

“He has his own preparation, but I have to say he is very professional in the way he gets himself ready for games,” the Spurs boss said.

“He is so methodical. I am happy to have him here and to see him in such good form.”
