Spurs boss claims his side deserved to beat Arsenal

Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood felt his side deserved to beat Arsenal in the north London derby.

Tomas Rosicky’s second minute strike separated the two sides but Spurs were unable to breach the Gunners’ goal, despite 17 attempts over the course of 90 minutes.

And he felt that if they had got back to level pegging, Tottenham would have emerged as winners.

“I’m pleased with my players, especially after going behind so early,” he said. “They stuck together and took the game to Arsenal.

“We didn’t deserve to lose that game – we deserved to win it.

Emmanuel Adebayor was a livewire for Spurs up front but he was unable to score against his former club, despite being incredibly keen to do so.

“We had a few good opportunities and it just missed his toe in the first half,” Sherwood admitted.

“He had a good chance with the header. I don’t blame anyone for missing chances.

“We had a few glorious ones there today which would have made it a lot happier evening for us.”

Tottenham had two shots on target – the first came when Wojciech Szczesny dropped a high ball into the box but Laurent Koscielny blocked Nacer Chadli’s shot.

The second came when Adebayor tried to curl the ball home but the Polish stopper was equal to his effort.

Despite dominating the game against the Gunners, Sherwood only cared about the result.

“I’m a winner and I want to win,” he said. “I’d rather play bad and win the game.

“Anyone who can see that game today knows that we don’t deserve to lose that.

“They had one shot in the second half where Hugo [Lloris] makes a great save from [Per] Mertesacker.

“They came here to counter attack which is a credit to us. The boys stuck to their guns.

“We should have scored and if we had we’d have won the game. The momentum would have taken us there.

“The crowd were fantastic and stuck with us all the way and you’d expect that when the boys are giving that sort of effort.”

The defeat leaves Tottenham seven points shy of fourth placed Manchester City, who have played three games left and Sherwood knows that securing Champions League football is unlikely.

“I think it was difficult anyway,” he said. “We’re just going to try and accumulate as many points as we can.

“We’ve got a tough game away at Benfica. We come and play here on Sunday.

“We need the same performance against Southampton and if we play like that we’ll win the game.

“There’s no crisis here. We lost to Chelsea who are a lot of people’s favourites to win the league. In the first half I thought we were really good. The capitulation which we spoke about we wasn’t happy with.

“Benfica was a tough game and it went against us.

“Then we had Arsenal in a London derby and I think we deserved to win. I’ve learnt more as a manager than I’ve learnt over the easy periods.”
