Mauricio Pochettino says he will wait until after the transfer closes before appointing Michael Dawson’s successor as Tottenham captain.

Dawson completed a £6million move to Hull yesterday, but Spurs’ head coach says he will wait to finalise his squad before speaking to the players and agreeing who will wear the armband.

“We have many leaders and we will decide in the next few days, after the transfer window has closed,” he said. “This is a decision we will take all together, obviously me with the players in the next few days.

“It’s important that we have many leaders in the group, and you only need to wait a few days to know the new captain.”

Tottenham host Cypriot side AEL Limassol in the second leg of their Europa League play-off tomorrow, and Pochettino is evasive about who will lead the team out.

“In the last game against Limassol it was [Hugo] Lloris, and in the two Premier League games it was Younes Kaboul,” said the Argentine. “For tomorrow, maybe it will be Hugo or another.”

As the clock ticks down towards the end of the transfer window, speculation continues about who will be coming in to White Hart Lane and who could depart.

Vlad Chiriches is yet to appear this season due to injury, but Pochettino says the Romanian defender is in the squad for tomorrow’s Europa League tie.

Meanwhile, Andros Townsend has been the subject of two bids from Southampton and was left out of the squad for Sunday’s Premier League victory over QPR – but he is also expected to face Limassol.

“He [Townsend] is in my plans,” said Pochettino. “It is impossible you play or have only 11 players in the squad - you need 24 or 25 players.

“We have to play a lot of games and it is possible you play today, then don’t play in the next Premier League game, but the most important thing is understanding that we need to choose for the games.

“It is only 11 in each game - after that another three impact players come in. We have an unbelievable squad and my job is not only to put my philosophy in the club or on the pitch on how we need to play, but I need a choice and that is my job.”

With that in mind, Pochettino is keen to add another centre-back to his ranks, with Sevilla’s Federico Fazio the leading candidate.

“We have [Younes] Kaboul, we have Chiriches, we have [Jan] Vertonghen, we have [Eric] Dier, we have [Zeki] Fryers, we have Milos Veljkovic,” said the head coach.

“It’s important to have balance for this season, because we have a lot of games. We need to have different options in this position.

“We have different players, all with different characteristics and it’s important to add some players and then you can choose the best options in every game.”

Pochettino is keen to progress past Limassol in the Europa League play-off and, having witnessed Manchester United’s shock 4-0 defeat at MK Dons first-hand last night, he is urging his side to take the game seriously.

“Every competition that we enter, it’s important to try to go as far as possible. The Europa League this year is important because, if you win the trophy, you have the opportunity to play in the next Champions League.

“Every game is important but tomorrow we need to be focused and serious because we expect a very tough game and we need to go into the next round of the Europa League.”

“I watched the game in Milton Keynes, live, I was there. It was difficult but it’s a good example to be ready for tomorrow. We got a good result in Larnaca but we need to ready and focused on the game.”

Roberto Soldado will miss tomorrow’s European clash due to a problem with his back and neck, and Kyle Walker is still out of action with his troublesome pelvic injury.

Summer signing Michel Vorm is continuing to build up his fitness following his extended break after the World Cup and is unlikely to appear until after the international break.
