Tim Sherwood says he is considering recalling Tom Carroll from his loan spell at QPR, and that he does not want the midfielder to be cup-tied this weekend.
Spurs have denied Rangers permission to play the England Under-21 international in their FA Cup third round tie away at Everton this afternoon – although Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been allowed to turn out for the Rs.
That suggests that Carroll may be on his way back to White Hart Lane, and Sherwood admits he might need to field the youngster in future FA Cup ties this season - provided Spurs are still in the hat after today’s showdown with Arsenal at the Emirates.
Asked if the midfielder might be returning, Tottenham’s head coach replied: “Possibly, we’re looking at the situation. Hopefully we’re in the next round so he can play [for us].”
QPR manager Harry Redknapp believes that Carroll is likely to return to Spurs, but that left-back Assou-Ekotto should be staying at Loftus Road.
“I would think Tim would let Benni stay with is,” he said. “At the moment he’s not in his plans - but Tom could be going back soon. I should hear something in the next week or so.”
