Spurs boss: Kaboul could be vital but we must be cautious

Tim Sherwood says Younes Kaboul could be a vital asset to Tottenham in the final four months of the season – but he won’t rush the Frenchman back into action and risk another setback.

Kaboul has been blighted by injuries since the end of the 2011-12 campaign, missing virtually all of last season and then making just nine appearances so far this term while going in and out of the treatment room.

The 28-year-old’s latest blow came after the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on November 24, and he has missed the last 14 games since then with a thigh problem.

He is now back in training ahead of the return fixture against the Citizens at White Hart Lane on Wednesday – and he completed an hour as a Spurs XI beat West Ham 3-0 in a friendly at Upton Park yesterday.

However, Sherwood says the centre-back’s return to competitive action must be handled carefully and that the management team is keen to avoid a repeat of past mistakes.

“It will be good to get Younes back,” said the head coach. “We’re very cautious. We need to make sure he’s right before he comes back in because perhaps he’s dipped back in a little bit too early on recent occasions, and then we’re paying the price because he’s out for another eight to 10 weeks.

“We don’t want that to happen again. If we get him right now, we want him right until the end of the season because he could be vital for us.”
