Tim Sherwood has hailed Aaron Lennon’s performance against West Brom on Saturday, while Younes Kaboul believes the winger could force his way back into the England squad for the World Cup.

Lennon had a big hand in two of Spurs’ goals in the 3-3 draw at The Hawthorns, lofting the ball in for Harry Kane’s 70th-minute header and then seeing another chipped delivery fall for Christian Eriksen in injury-time.

The 26-year-old has rarely been so influential in the final third this season but has nonetheless started seven of the last nine games – including the last four – and Sherwood was pleased with his latest display.

“He’s reliable, Aaron,” said the head coach. “Every manager who comes to this club always picks Aaron Lennon, and now I know why from being on the inside. He did have a big effect on the game.”

Kaboul added: “We didn’t use him as we should have done in the game, especially in the first half. He was free a lot of times, at the side. In the second half, we played more with him and he got an assist. He had a very good game.

“Should he go to the World Cup? Yes, he’s got a big chance to go. I hope he goes, he deserves it.”

For much of the season, Andros Townsend has looked set to win a place in Brazil, but his lack of first-team opportunities may be putting his place in jeopardy.

He eventually appeared in the 85th minute against Albion on Saturday but found himself replacing Danny Rose at left-back as Sherwood went for broke in search of the equaliser.

Spurs’ head coach said: “Roy [Hodgson] knows him well and I’ve had enough conversations with Roy. He knows what I think of Andros.

“He’s got to weigh up his options, Roy - see what other options he’s got. One thing’s for sure about Andros, he won’t let anyone down given the opportunity.

“I like them all, but Eriksen can’t be left out. He’s always liable to do what he did [by scoring the equaliser]. It was Bergkamp-esqe.

“I thought Andros came on with a very good attitude. We moved Danny out and he gave us that bit of thrust down the side.”
