Tim Sherwood says he expects all of the Tottenham players to shake Charlie Adam’s hand at the Britannia Stadium tomorrow.

Adam is an unpopular figure among Spurs fans, having been sent off twice against the Lilywhites - in September 2011 and May 2013 - while also injuring their players on three occasions.

The Scottish midfielder ended Gareth Bale’s season prematurely in May 2011, when he was playing for Blackpool, and then after moving to Liverpool he put the Welshman back in the treatment room during a pre-season friendly in Baltimore in July 2012.

Adam moved on to Stoke and, when the Potters hosted Tottenham last May, the 28-year-old was sent off for two challenges on Jan Vertonghen. He then put Paulinho out for a month in the last meeting between the sides in December.

Given that history, it has been reported that Spurs players might snub the Stoke man during the traditional pre-match handshakes at the Britannia Stadium tomorrow – but Sherwood has dismissed the rumour.

“I was aware of the reports, it’s nonsense,” said Spurs’ head coach. “The players will do their duty and shake hands along that line to show respect to their opposition.

“I haven’t heard the boys talking about Charlie Adam at all. They’re just concentrating on the game. I don’t think it’s a problem. I would hate to think that every time I tackled someone they’d never shake my hand – I would never have had a handshake!

“Charlie is a combative player and he tries to do his job the best that he possibly can. I like my players to do the same and sometimes you’re going to mistime them, but just get on with the game. It’s part and parcel of it, unfortunately.

“What would my message to my players be? Don’t worry about Charlie Adam, worry about yourself. If you perform well and we all perform collectively then we should get the result that we need. Forget about Charlie Adam.

“We respect Stoke, we respect the job that Mark Hughes has done there. He’s been given the time to build something there and he’s been showing the fruits of it just recently.”

When Adam injured Paulinho earlier this season, Sandro posted a message on Instagram stating: “Charlie Adam – the Beast is watching you!”

The Brazilian midfielder would no doubt relish the chance to face Stoke tomorrow, but he has fallen down the pecking order and was omitted from last week’s squad for the home game against Fulham.

Sherwood said today: “There are just people ahead of him [Sandro] in the squad and I’ll have to assess it. We’ll train again today and he’s trained well all week.

“He’s a good trainer but he’s got certain attributes that we require at certain times, and other players have got other attributers that I need for different games.

“We’ve been dominating the football in most of our games recently and I think other people are ahead of him in regards to that.

“What would he have to do to force his way back in? It would just be a change of style possibly in what we need to do, and just keep training hard and doing what he can do.

“He can’t turn himself into a different type of player. He’s one of the best in the Premier League at breaking up the game, but he’s had his injury problems, and when I think it’s right for him to go back in and give us the qualities that he shows then he’ll be back in.”

Sherwood reports that Michael Dawson is back in the squad as he returns from a hamstring injury, but Etienne Capoue has only trained for two days while Jan Vertonghen has only had one session as the pair continue their own recoveries, so tomorrow’s game has come too soon for them.

Meanwhile, Sherwood has reiterated once again that Erik Lamela will not play again this campaign as he continues his slow comeback from a back problem.

“I haven’t seen him, he hasn’t trained with the group yet,” said the head coach. “It’s going to come too soon for Erik, unfortunately, the end of the season. The last thing you want to do is rush back.

“He’ll want to play, he certainly will, and everyone would love to see him play but it’s going to be too soon for him.

“Recently I spoke to our medical guys and I said in the close season we have five weeks off and then we come back and we have six weeks of pre-season, so someone who’s been out for 12 or 13 weeks surely can’t be fit in two or three days. It’s just not going to be possible, he’s not going to play this season.

“Would I be surprised if he’s picked for the Argentina World Cup squad? It would be a surprise to me because I haven’t seen Erik. He’s not trained yet - but there’s a bit of a time before the World Cup kicks off.

“It all depends how their national manager sees him in the pecking order and what other options they’ve got. That goes for any national team manager. “I haven’t seen him around the training ground a lot, he’s backwards and forwards seeing different specialists. Were trying to get him back as quickly as possible.”
