MIKE McKINLEY: It's bad when even the booing sounds half-hearted

Oh dear.

It takes some doing to overtake Newcastle as the club in crisis, but we're doing our damnedest to get there with our rotten start. Even the post-Villa boos seemed a bit lethargic, as if there was nothing too unexpected in our latest flop.

It is all a bit perplexing. After all, we managed to look good in pre-season against decent sides. Ramos came with the reputation as a great motivator. We invested heavily in decent players over the past two windows. So why does everything look so, to be blunt, rubbish?

We remain soft at the back, which is really is deflating having battled so admirably at Chelsea. And going forward there just doesn't seem to be a spark - we're relying on fortune and scraps for our goals rather than magic.

My personal gripe is the lack of consistency in selection. Players are in and out of the team, and positions seem to be chosen almost at random. Paying big money for one of the league's best right wingers to then play him on the left has me totally baffled.

"In Ramos we trust" remains the mantra though, and it's far too early to be making judgements on an almost brand new team. But pretty soon you would want to see evidence of the masterplan and some signs that things are going to come together.

A defeat against Wigan really doesn't bear thinking about, and the fallout would surely be very unpleasant. But hand on heart, can anyone honestly say they don't fear exactly that? Save us from that, please Spurs.
