TOTTENHAM remain slumped at the foot of the Premier League table after losing to Aston Villa at the Lane on Monday night.

The loss was Tottenham's third of the season, leaving Ramos's men without a win in the League this season and only a solitary point to show from their first four games.

Ramos on Monday sought to breathe life into his new-look team by giving Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka their first starts.

But Aston Villa immediately put the Lilywhites under pressure, and were promptly rewarded when Nigel Reo-Coker netted in the fifth minute from Gabriel Agbonlahor's cross.

Spurs would surely have slipped further behind but for the exploits of keeper Heurelho Gomes who made a host of outstanding saves.

The barrage continued in the second half with Villa creating space down the left before doubling their lead nine minutes after the restart when Gomes misjudged a Ashley Young shot, allowing the ball to bounce under him and into the net.

Tottenham gave themselves a lifeline late on when Darren Bent steered a ball from substitute Jermaine Jenas into the net.

But it was Villa who had the best chance to score in the final minutes, Jenas blocking a shot from Marlon Harewood on the line.

SPURS PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jermaine Jenas. Made a goal and saved one.

Team: Gomes 7, Corluka 5, Dawson 5 (Giovani 5, 61), Woodgate 5, Bale 5, Lennon 5, Zokora 6 (Bentley 5, 45), Huddlestone 5, Modric 5 (Jenas, 7, 29); Pavlyuchenko 5, Bent 6. subs not used: Cesar, Giblerto, Campbell, O'Hara
