The club legend looked ahead to Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Wembley and discussed why he thinks Harry Kane should stay at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur legend Martin Chivers is hoping to see his old club win some type of silverware this season.
March is set to be a big month for Spurs with Juventus visiting on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Chivers, who scored 174 goals in 367 competitive games for the Lilywhites, was mightily impressed with the way Mauricio Pochettino’s side coped when two goals down after nine minutes in Turin during the first leg as they fought back to draw 2-2.
After facing the Old Lady, Tottenham will visit AFC Bournemouth on Sunday looking to remain on track to finish in the top-four before they travel to Swansea City on March 17 to battle for a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
There is plenty to play for and when speaking at the London Football Awards 2018 last Thursday, in aid of the national charity Willow Foundation, Chivers said: “What would constitute success this season? Winning something for the fans.
“The fans are desperate for something. Just for instance, if we don’t go any further in the Champions League, we’ve got a wonderful chance with the FA Cup and it’s nice to be in these types of competitions, but who knows what can happen?
“The result we got over in Turin was just exceptional and it surprised me. I couldn’t believe it!
“I had all sorts of texts coming through after nine minutes, all my friends were saying ‘what the hell’s going on?’ but then they came back and played some great football. It was brilliant.”
If Spurs are to finish this season with silverware, you would imagine Harry Kane will play a big part.
The 24-year-old has been in sensational form in all competitions and is currently the joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League with 24 goals.
Kane has also netted on seven occasions in the Champions League and a further four times in the FA Cup this term.
It is this type of form which has seen the England international linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Chivers scoffed at suggestions he could leave and added he will definitely enjoy a fantastic life if he remains at Tottenham.
“Everyone is asking how Spurs will hold onto Harry Kane,” Chivers commented with bemusement at Battersea Evolution.
“I think it needs to be success. We have a new stadium coming and he obviously needs to be rewarded for how he is playing.
“They can speculate about him getting more money going abroad, but if I was a mentor for Harry I would say really think about going abroad because it’s not as easy as everybody thinks.
“I managed it (at Servette) because I could speak a language, but this is a big problem and you’ve seen Gareth Bale go over to Spain and now there is all the speculation about him coming back again.
“You’ve got to live when you go abroad, you’ve got to learn the language, you’ve got to mix in with the people and some people can do it, and some people can’t.
“I just hope Harry is the sort who would think ‘maybe I’ll take a little bit less (money) than I could be getting abroad and take it with Tottenham and have a fantastic life’ and he will have a fantastic life at Spurs.”
