Harry Kane is hoping to one day go past Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals for Tottenham Hotspur after becoming the club’s leading scorer in the Premier League last weekend.

The England international netted another brace against Everton on Saturday – his third in a row versus the Toffees – to move onto 98 goals in the league format which started in 1992 and beyond previous record holder Teddy Sheringham.

With Kane now Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League, he was asked about potentially beating Greaves’ stunning total in the future.

Although the 24-year-old’s tally of 127 goals in all competitions is a little bit behind the Spurs legend, it is still a long-term aim for the Walthamstow-born striker.

“Of course,” said Kane, when asked if beating Greaves’ record of 266 goals for the club was something he wanted to do.

“I always set my targets a bit smaller, maybe month by month every couple of months, but if I carry on the way I am going then hopefully I can.”

Kane was speaking after beating Sheringham’s goalscoring record in the Premier League for Spurs.

His double against Everton, during Saturday’s 4-0 cruise at Wembley, places him ninth in the all-time list of scorers for Tottenham.

But there is now another target in the thoughts of the one-time Leyton Orient loanee ahead of visiting Southampton on Sunday.

“I always watch the 100 club on TV and to be two away now from a 100 Premier League goals is exciting,” said Kane. “Hopefully I can do it as soon as possible and then go onto the next 100.”

While reflecting on his latest goalscoring exploits, the former Spurs academy graduate paid tribute to Sheringham.

He added: “Teddy was a big hero of mine growing up. To be ahead of him now is amazing, especially considering I have not been playing in the Premier League for that long. I have got to keep it going. Hopefully I can get to the 100 as soon as possible.”

For the time being Kane and the rest of his Spurs team-mates can enjoy a few days in Barcelona for a training camp.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino admitted it is a good opportunity for the new members of squad to bond.

“It is a change of scenery really,” said Kane. “To refresh the mind, hopefully get a bit of sun and then just go from there.”
