England international only needs two more goals to reach a hundred in the league and netted a hat-trick against Southampton on Boxing Day

Harry Kane will look to achieve another feat this weekend when Tottenham Hotspur travel to St Mary’s to take on Southampton.

The Spurs forward hit a brace last Saturday during a 4-0 home win over Everton to become the club’s record goalscorer in the Premier League with 98 goals in the league format which started in 1992.

Kane went past the 97-goal tally of Teddy Sheringham against the Toffees and will aim to be the first Tottenham player to hit a century of goals in the Premier League on Sunday (4pm kick-off) at Saints.

If Mauricio Pochettino’s men are to stay on track for a top-four finish, they need to claim another league success this weekend.

“It is important we keep this momentum going,” explained Kane, after Saturday’s thrashing over Everton.

“February is a really tough month for us. We play Manchester United (on January 31), then we have Liverpool, Arsenal and the Champions League as well.

“So, it is important we keep winning and take this form into February and see what happens.”

If Tottenham play at Southampton like they did in the second half against Everton, they should have few problems seeing off the threat of the struggling hosts.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s Saints are currently 17th in the table with 21 points and just one point ahead of Stoke City, who occupy the final relegation spot.

Southampton haven’t won in the league since November 26, when they defeated Everton 4-1, but they have drawn with the likes of AFC Bournemouth, Arsenal, Huddersfield Town, Man United and Watford since.

Tottenham have beaten Saints recently too with the clubs doing battle at Wembley Stadium on Boxing Day and Spurs winning 5-2 with Kane scoring a treble.

He broke the record for goals scored in a calendar year during that match and will be after more historic feats on Sunday.

Team-mate Heung-min Son also netted against Southampton last month and he is in stunning form right now having scored in five consecutive home league games.

Kane hailed the talents of the South Korean, he added: “‘Sonny’ has been amazing all season. He is really growing in confidence and he is just getting better and better with every game.

“Everyone was great against Everton – Christian (Eriksen) and Dele (Alli). When you have these sort of players in fine form, as a striker, it is just about getting in the right place at the right time. They have all been great and hopefully it will continue.”

He continued: “When we are in the form we showed on Saturday we are hard to stop, but it is important we stay focused and keep that momentum going and take it into the games ahead.”
