Danny Rose: Why Spurs are trailing the top four sides

Danny Rose has hailed Tottenham’s performance against Arsenal, but he says the Gunners were more clinical – and that is the difference between the top four sides and the chasing pack.

Tomas Rosicky fired the visitors into the lead inside 90 seconds at White Hart Lane yesterday, lashing the ball across Hugo Lloris and into the top corner with a stunning finish.

Spurs went on to create more opportunities during the game and they deserved to score at least once, but Nacer Chadli squandered the best two chances and Emmanuel Adebayor also narrowly missed the target on two occasions before testing Wojciech Szczesny late on.

The result was Tottenham’s third successive defeat following losses against Chelsea and Benfica, and Rose said: “It’s been very difficult, the results haven’t been what we all wanted.

“The second-half performance against Chelsea was difficult to take and we were outplayed on Thursday night against Benfica.

“Yesterday we gave everything. I’m not sure there will be many teams who have Arsenal penned in like that for the majority of the game, and it’s definitely hard to take. But when you lose to an outstanding goal like we did there’s not much you can do really.

“Everyone’s worked for each other, and it’s the best we’ve played in a very long time. The fans were brilliant.

“The difference between the very top teams is that when they get a chance they take it, which Arsenal did, and we had a couple of clear-cut goalscoring opportunities and we didn’t take them. That’s the difference between the top four and the teams that are below.”

Spurs are now seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have three games in hand, and Rose admits that the Champions League dreams is effectively over for another year.

“If everyone’s being brutally honest… Man City have got a couple of games in hand and you look at the way Liverpool are playing at the moment,” said the defender.

“Even though Chelsea lost, they’re always resilient and you’d be expecting them to bounce back. Arsenal are playing well too, and if you look at their record when they got knocked out of the Champions League last season, it’s pretty frightening.

“It will be very hard to break into the top four this season, but we’ve got a manager who won’t let anybody’s standards slip, and we’ll keep pushing until the last day, like last season.”
