Nacer Chadli says he is comfortable playing in central midfield after being given a new role in the Tottenham side last night.

The Belgian initially played on the flanks after signing for Spurs last summer, before being moved inside to take up a position as a No10.

He was surprisingly switched into a deeper position against Sunderland at White Hart Lane yesterday evening, playing in the centre of a four-man midfield alongside Paulinho in a 4-4-2 system – and the versatile 24-year-old says he is happy with his latest role.

“I’ve played there in the national team – not a full game, but I’ve sometimes played the last 20 or 30 minutes a step lower on the pitch,” he said. “I think it went well with Paulinho, we had a good combination and it was good to play.

“With the national team I usually play higher, in the No10 position, but this time we played with two strikers so there was no No10 and I played in central midfield. For me that’s also good.”

Spurs triumphed 5-1 with two goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and strikes from Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Chadli said: “It was a very good result. We had to win against the team who are bottom of the league and we did it. The way we did it was also good – five goals.

“It’s important to get goals at home and we showed our quality. We could have got more goals but five is ok.”

The build-up to the game was dominated by strong rumours that Tim Sherwood will be replaced in the summer, but Chadli said: “It’s just speculation.

“We just play every game for the three points and we work hard during the week. We don’t really hear this speculation.”
