Super Swinhoe cleans up with victory for Heathside at Wormwood Scrubs

London Heathside’s Sarah Swinhoe won the women’s race at the Middlesex County Championships on Saturday, leading her team to second place overall.

Swinhoe finished in 34 minutes 49 seconds at Wormwood Scrubs – two seconds ahead of her closest pursuer – while her clubmates Rebecca Bunting (36:33) and Sue Rust (36:55) were 11th and 12th respectively, and Cathy Jeremiah completed the four to score, coming 18th in 38:03.

The combined total of their finishing places was 42, and that left Heathside second in the women’s table behind Thames Valley Harriers (29), while Highgate Harriers were fourth with 77.

Highgate’s Kate Meredith came fourth in the race, clocking 35:09 over the waterlogged course, and she was followed by her team-mates Ashley Scott (22nd in 38:56), Gema Rous (23rd in 39:02) and Sophie Sheldrake (28th in 40:04).

Meanwhile, Heathside’s Tom Aldred was ninth out of the 165 competitors in the men’s event, with the six-to-score team coming fifth with 199 points.

He was followed by his clubmates Steve Monoghan (25th in 45:31), George Stewart (27th in 45:55), Daniel McKeown (33rd in 46:31), Michael Stocks (36th in 45:37) and Simon Nash (39th in 47:03).

Highgate’s men’s team were third (175), with Jonny Laybourne leading the side home with a 16th-placed finish, clocking 43:40.

The other Harriers scorers were John McKeane (19th in 44:05), Mark Townsend (28th in 45:58), Duncan Burbridge (32nd in 46:19), Tom Christopher (38th in 46:52) and Jack Matthewman (42nd in 47: 25).

Highgate’s juniors had a particularly good day, despite the wet conditions, and Terry Fawden won the boys’ Under-15 race, with his team also coming first.

He posted a time of 15:29 over the 4k course, while Dempster Fawden was fifth in 16:00 and Esteban Ghrous was ninth (16:27), giving the victorious Harriers 15 points. Heathside were fourth, with seventh-placed David Keto (16:13) having their best individual result.

Highgate’s Georgia Fear also won her race in the Under-17 women’s event, finishing in 19:44, while Heathside’s Genevieve Weston was 13th in 24:55.

Meanwhile, Hannah Viner won the women’s Under-20 competition in 20:55, while her Harriers colleague Hattie Brock was second in 22:55 – and Heathside’s Yanna Raykov was third in 23:18.

There was also success for Highgate’s Under-13 girls team, who got the bronze medal.

Cecily Turner was sixth (12:31) over the 3k course and the scoring three was completed by Sasha Fear (ninth in 12:52) and Jess Wilkinson (12th in 13:04).

Sevcen other Harriers competed in the race, while the Heathside team came sixth.

In the Under-15 girls’ race, Highgate’s Lilah Fear was 11th in 19:12, just ahead of 13th-placed Esther Pigney (19:20) – and Marjolaine Briscoe completed the scoring three, coming 16th (19:34) as the Harriers team came fourth with 40 points.
