Leon Smith took his tally to nine goals in 11 games for Hendon as they chalked up three victories in six days.

Smith, who joined Hendon from neighbours Wingate & Finchley in February, scored the only goal against Bury Town last Thursday and Carshalton Athletic on Saturday, before hitting a brace in Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over Lewes.

On Saturday, Gary McCann’s side made hard work of defeating bottom side Carshalton Athletic at Earlsmead.

Following Thursday night’s 1-0 win over Bury Town, victory was sealed in similarly narrow circumstances on Saturday, thanks to Smith’s strike just before half-time.

Smith wasted the first genuine opening of the match, cutting inside onto his right foot and arrowing a shot towards goal which Michael White did well to keep out.

He made amends shortly afterwards. Elliot Brathwaite delivered a teasing cross into the box, and Smith was first to react, rolling the ball past the keeper at the near post.

Smith twice came close early in the second half, having one effort saved by White and knocking on a header from Brathwaite which was cleared off the line.

Hendon keeper Joe McDonnell, rarely tested until that point, then did well to save from Carshalton substitute Paul Scott.

The visitors felt they should have had a penalty late in the match, as the ball rolled towards McDonnell, who went down under a challenge. The linesman appeared ready to award the spot-kick, but was overruled by the referee.

Smith continued his good run with a brace in Lewes on Tuesday night. After the match had been held up for 16 minutes due to a floodlight failure, the forward opened the scoring from the spot on 21 minutes.

And he added a second midway through the second half, rounding off a fine counter-attack.
