Hendon moved up to fifth place in the table after recording their fifth victory of the season, winning 1-0 away at Canvey Island on Tuesday night.

The Greens bounced back from Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at home to Enfield Town to get straight back on track in midweek.

The only goal of the game was scored by Kezie Ibe on 18 minutes after excellent approach play and a precise cross from Chris Seeby was finished by the in-form striker.

Hendon’s chances of securing the three points were given an added boost three minutes into the second half when Victor Osubu was shown a red card for a professional foul on Ibe as the striker looked to get a shot off in the penalty area.

Ibe took responsibility from the spot but his penalty was easily saved.

It is the third penalty that Hendon have missed this season, with Leon Smith and Lee O’Leary also failing to find the back of the net.

The Greens had half a dozen chances to extend their lead in the second half but failed to take them, which led to a nervous final 10 minutes, but they stood firm.

Manager Gary McCann said: “I am very pleased with the win. The boys responded excellently to Saturday’s disappointment and to the individual criticism I laid at some of them.

“It is a bit of a concern that we are not putting games to bed. If you have a one-goal lead late on, all it takes is a lucky bounce or a deflection to drop two points.

“But if you’d offered me 16 points from eight games at the start of the season I would have bitten your hand off.

“I set the players the target of getting 13 points from the opening month and we achieved that after six games.

“I want 13 points next month and advancement in the FA Cup.”

Hendon will host AFC Rushden and Diamonds in the FA Cup on Saturday September 13.
