Hendon’s excellent start to the Ryman League season has continued with back-to-back victories over VCD Athletic and Bognor Regis Town.

The Greens won 3-1 at newly-promoted VCD on Saturday thanks to goals from Kezie Ibe, Sam Murphy and Aaron Morgan – and they went on to secure a 1-0 home win over Bognor Regis Town on Monday.

Casey Maclaren struck the decisive goal early in the second half, and the Greens could have been more comfortable if Lee O’Leary had not missed a penalty.

Dons boss Gary McCann said: “I am really pleased. The defence has been really solid and, but for a mistake on Saturday, we might have had our third clean in four games.

“I am very pleased with the win, especially in back-to-back home games. Last season our home form was nowhere near as good as our form away. I want us to be much stronger at home.

“We could and maybe should have been out of sight at half-time, but so long as the game was only 1-0 there is always going to be a nervous time near the end.

“I don’t like to single out players, but our defence was very good, protecting George Legg. Every one of the four – Chris Seeby, Casey Maclaren, Elliott Brathwaite and young Ollie Sprague – did very well, but Brathwaite and Sprague deserve special mentions.

“With Leon Smith on the bench, I had not selected a penalty-taker. But Lee O’Leary stepped up and was confident, so with no designated person on spot-kick duty, I wasn’t going to stop him. We will be focusing on penalties in training this week.”
