Hendon returned to winning ways after a 3-1 home win over Kingstonian and are now eight points off the top in the Ryman League Premier Division, capitalising as two of the three teams above them suffered surprise defeats.

Gary McCann’s Greens had gone down 1-0 away at Enfield Town in their previous outing, but they bounced back at Earlsmead on Saturday after a lightning-quick start.

Casey Maclaren gave the hosts a 14th-minute lead, and the Dons were 3-0 up 11 minutes later after further strikers from Kezie Ibe and Aaron Morgan.

Chris Seeby was sent off just before the hour-mark and ex-Greens defender Sam Page pulled a goal back in the final 10 minutes, but it was only a consolation as Hendon became the only side in the top four to win at the weekend.

Leaders Maidstone suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Enfield and third-placed Dulwich Hamlet lost 1-0 at 15th-placed Hampton & Richmond Borough, while second-placed Margate’s scheduled fixture against Hornchurch was called off.

Fifth-placed Metropolitan Police and seventh-placed Wingate & Finchley also won, but McCann was delighted with the weekend’s results.

“It was a really good day for us, with the teams above us – Dulwich and Maidstone – losing,” he said. “After losing at Enfield, it was imperative to get back to winning ways and this was a difficult game.

“If it had gone the other way we would have been looking over our shoulders and been worrying about dropping out of the play-offs.

“It was a performance that had a little bit of everything. We started slowly, but that was no surprise given that we had not played a competitive game for 14 days and Kingstonian came in on the back of four straight wins.

“But once we got into the game, we were excellent. Despite the conditions our passing was very good and we could have scored a few more goals.”
