Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta was quick to congratulate his former Osasuna team-mate Nacho Monreal when he signed for Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
Full-backs Azpilicueta and Monreal came through the youth ranks at the Spanish club and played together until 2010, when the former joined French side Marseille.
Azpilicueta signed for Chelsea in the summer and he has been followed to the Premier League by Monreal, who sealed a last gasp switch to the Gunners from Malaga last week.
The pair are now together on international duty with Spain as they prepare to face Uruguay in Doha on Wednesday.
“We are very happy,” the uncapped Azpilicueta told El Pais after receiving his first Spain call-up.
He continued: “The other day I congratulated [Monreal] on signing for Arsenal and the next day he rang to congratulate me [on the Spain call-up].
“18 years old at Osasuna, it was difficult to imagine that we would meet again with the national team.”
Tottenham have missed their chance to sign Joao Moutinho after last summer’s primary transfer target agreed a five-year deal with Monaco.
