Wojciech Szczesny faces Arsenal rap for offensive gesture after Bayern red card

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will face a club punishment for an alleged obscene gesture made after he was dismissed against Bayern Munich.

The Polish stopper was shown a red card for a penalty box professional foul on former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben just before half time as the Gunners lost 2-0 in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie.

He will miss the return tie in Bavaria next month but the ban could be extended by a further match - should the north Londoners progress - once a UEFA disciplinary committee reviews the video footage.

But manager Arsene Wenger revealed there will also be a punishment handed down by the club.

“We’ll deal with that internally,” the boss said. “We don’t agree with that.

“It was frustration but we are professionals and, me included, we have always to master our reactions and Wojciech is part of that as well.”

Yet Wenger welcomed the news that UEFA will review the rule on professional fouls in the 18-yard box resulting in the double punishment of a dismissal and a penalty.

Wenger said: “Certainly the common sense is that you should divide between what’s inside the box and what’s outside the box.

“Denying a goalscoring opportunity inside the box is restored by the fact that you get a penalty.

“In this case, for example with Robben, you can say that the penalty was a better chance than he had when he was denied the goalscoring opportunity.

“I think the yellow card would have been enough because it’s not violent conduct from Wojciech. He went for the ball, he caught him but, certainly, you would want not to kill a game of that stature by a decision that doesn’t make common sense.”
