Arsene Wenger says Mikel Arteta is ready to return to his Arsenal side but Alexis Sanchez remains injured.

The Gunners take on Sunderland on Saturday afternoon and they will do so with their fit-again captain.

Arteta has been out of action since November with a calf injury but the Spaniard featured in an under-21 game in midweek.

Wenger says it is a boost to have the experienced midfielder in the squad.

“Everybody is available from last week,” Wenger said. “Arteta is available because he played 45 minutes on Tuesday with the under-21s.

“He has been in and out since the start of the season and I hope he can be a consistent presence in the squad.”

Alexis Sanchez, however, has not yet recovered from his hamstring injury and the Chilean will miss the game against Sunderland, as well as the Premier League fixture against Liverpool next week.

“Sanchez is a bit short to be involved but he is not far. Welbeck is maybe three weeks away.

“Liverpool will come too soon as well for Sanchez, maybe he will be fit for Stoke.”
