Petr Cech has issued a damming indictment on the underachievement of the last few years of Arsene Wenger’s reign at the club.

Cech who kept a clean sheet during an excellent performance in the 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates on Sunday saw his side clinch their fourth league win in a row, and fifth on the bounce including the 4-2 victory over Vorskla at the Emirates, in which understudy Bernd Leno made his bow.

The season has been a challenging one for the experienced former Chelsea shotstopper after new head coach Unai Emery took over from the long-serving Wenger in May.

With former PSG boss Emery demanding his defence play the ball out from the back the season started with two defeats against champions Manchester City and London rivals Chelsea.

Reflecting on the early struggles in a response to a question from the Gazette Cech responded saying: “It’s been a new way for the whole team and we need to find a way to use it to our advantage but every day and every game we are improving.”

Against Everton Cech, kept only his third clean sheer in the last 23 matches as the Gunners moved up to a healthy six place as they hunt for silverware this season.

However it was his response to a subject the much-loved Santi Cazorla touched upon over the weekend that shone a light on the final few years of the Wenger era.

In response to Cazorla saying that Arsenal lacked self belief to win the top trophies the experienced Cech said: “For any club who’ve won titles in recent years you have that knowhow how to finish it off. You can see that in any sport. Take Tiger Woods.

“Five years it’s been since he won a major tournament – the longer it goes the harder it becomes. This club haven’t won the league for more than ten years so you need to get back into knowing how to do it.

“We started off with the new manager from scratch and we’re trying to get a mentality of winning every game, progressing every game, working every day and hopefully we can build this up and win the title sooner rather than later.”

With Arsenal going a long nine years without a trophy before lifting the 2014 FA Cup while still missing out on the Premier League and failing to quality for the Champions League over the past two seasons Cech gave an honest explanation as to why that was the case.

When asked what the team lacked in the past he said: “The Arsenal way was more important than getting the points sometimes. This is not sometimes how you win the league.

“Sometimes you need to make sure you win ugly games when you are not completely playing well and you just dig deep and you just closed the back door and win 1-0 no matter how.

“I think this is what we lacked since I arrived in the last three years this is what we lacked.
