Difficult run is opportunity to extend Arsenal’s Premier League lead, says Szczesny

Wojciech Szczesny believes Arsenal’s testing schedule over the coming weeks is a perfect opportunity to put daylight between themselves and their rivals.

The Gunners sit two points clear at the top of the Premier League after second-placed Manchester City suffered a surprise home defeat to fellow title contenders Chelsea on Monday.

Arsene Wenger’s side must tackle an awkward run of games during the next fortnight, with the visit of Manchester United sandwiched by league and FA Cup clashes against Liverpool.

The Gunners also face European champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie on Wednesday February 19, with the return in March to be followed by consecutive matches against Tottenham, Chelsea and City.

However, Szczesny insists Arsenal will relish the prospect of pitting themselves against so many difficult opponents, beginning with Saturday’s Premier League trip to Anfield (kick-off 12.45pm).

“Liverpool have great players, but we managed to keep a clean sheet at home [against them] and we’ll try to do exactly the same thing away from home,” said the Gunners goalkeeper.

“We’re looking forward to this game. Every player looks forward to games against big opponents and the world’s best players, so it’s very exciting.

“It’s a difficult run that we’ve got, but we look at it as a chance to create a bigger gap between us and the teams behind us. Hopefully we can show people what we’re made of.

“What we care about is being top at the end of May. We’re confident in our game and believe it’s going to pay off in the end.”
