Freddie Ljungberg’s Arsenal U21 side travelled to Forest Green Rovers in the Checkatrade Trophy on Wednesday evening. Read on for Layth Yousif’s match report on a bitterly cold night in deepest Gloucestershire.

Freddie Ljungberg’s talented young guns beat Forest Green Rovers 3-1 at their home of New Lawn in the village of Nailsworth – the smallest locale in the UK that hosts professional football.

The home fans could be proud of their teams efforts as they matched the gilded youth of North London.

It took two goals from starlet Joe Willock to put the junior gunners 2-0 ahead at the break.

Bukayo Saka ran at the home defence in the 41st minute before George Williams brought the youngster down in the box leaving referee Chris Sarginson no option but to award a spot-kick.

Up stepped Willock who calmly slotted home sending keeper James Montgomery the wrong way.

The 19-year-old doubled the lead 120 seconds later with a clincal finish to put Ljungberg’s side in the driving seat.

FGR pulled a goal back on 62 minutes when Dayle Grubb scored before Tyreece John-Jules late third sent Arsenal through to the next round.
