Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists defender Calum Chambers will not leave the club on loan this summer.

Chambers was signed by the Gunners from Southampton last summer for a fee in the region of £16m.

Injuries at the start of the season provided him with a lengthy run in the side, but the 20-year-old fell out of favour as the season went on.

Reports emerged last week suggesting that Southampton had failed in a bid to take their former academy graduate back to the club on a season-long loan move.

Wenger has denied those claims, and he says Chambers will remain at Arsenal for the upcoming season.

“They didn’t try to get him back on loan and I will not consider that,” he said. “Not at the moment.

“I want to develop him as a centre-back and at the moment we have just the right number. He will get games here.”

Chambers is likely to be the fourth-choice centre-back at the club this season behind Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel.

The Englishman is also able to fill in at right back, and he will deputise at that position for Hector Bellerin and Mathieu Debuchy.
