Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger claims midfielder Mikel Arteta will play a big part in the squad next season at the Emirates.

Arteta lead the Gunners team up the steps to lift the FA Cup trophy at Wembley on Saturday despite not being in the playing squad, something that has been a theme of the season.

The Spaniard has failed to make much impact at the Emirates and was linked with a move away this summer to regain his fitness, form and confidence.

However Wenger has dismissed that talk and wants Arteta to be back as a full first team player for the start of next season.

“Yes he has a part to play,” Wenger said.

“He went up to the lift the trophy up. Of course he feels a little less part of it because he wasn’t in the squad today but he will be next season.

“I think he has nearly signed.”

Arteta has one year remaining on his current contract but is set to sign another year extension, keeping him at the north London club until 2017.
