The 36-year-old faced a challenging afternoon against Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions at the Emirates on Sunday.

Questions were asked of Cech when England forward Raheem Sterling curled a shot past the flat-footed former Chelsea keeper in the 14th minute to put the visitors 1-0 up.

Unai Emery’s Emirates debut saw his team attempt to impose a pressing game while playing out from the back.

Yet Cech, struggled at times to carry out his head coach’s wishes – at one point almost guiding the ball into his own net during a fraught first half.

Despite showing his undoubted quality with a succession of saves, including an excellent double save from a Riyah Mahrez free-kick, closey followed blocking Aymeric Laporte’s follow-up, the 124-capped Czech netminder toiled on the opening day.

Speaking to the experienced netminder reflected on the match, saying: “Over most of my career I was asked to play long.

“It will be very useful when you want to beat a team who controls the game through possession.

“They pressed really well and obviously when you make one pass slower than it should be the player doesn’t have the time to use the ball quickly.

“You need to create the superiority in the back when you build up and obviously they are very used to playing a high press and they did it very well.”
