Bayer Leverkusen’s official English language Twitter account may have done Petr Cech a favour after they trolled him following mistakes against Manchester City on Sunday.

Speaking at London Colney on Thursday afternoon Emery confirmed the veteran Czech goalkeeper will keep his place against his former club Chelsea on Saturday.

Cech was slammed for his display by many, during and after the 2-0 defeat at home by Manchester City at the weekend, in particular with suggestions struggled to play out from the back, a style of play encouraged by the new man at the Emirates Stadium helm.

Those who criticised Cech included Die Werkself’s social media team who wanted to show their support for their former keeper Bernd Leno.

However, the joke backfired after Cech hit back on social media, as the incident saw Leverkusen’s regional newspaper, the Rheinische Post, calling the Twitter trolling of Cech an ‘own goal’ by the northern German Bundesliga club.

Emery dismissed the idea that Cech would be dropped in favour of £20 million keeper Leno ahead of the London derby at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

He said: ““I am very happy with his performance,” insisted the Spaniard. “He has experience, he has quality, he has the capacity. Also, with Bernd Leno [it’s the same]. They are two goalkeepers who are important for us.

“For Saturday, the decision for me is easy. Petr Cech can continue to start the match, I believe in him.

“[But in the future] if Bernd starts, I believe in him also.
