Arsenal beat AC Milan 2-0 in the Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday. Gunners reporter Layth Yousif covered the match from the San Siro. Read on for his PLAYER RATINGS.

David Ospina: 7 – The club’s cup keeper displayed a couple of rushes of blood as he raced off his line in a bid to close down the angle of onrushing forwards as well as trying to win the ball. Brave if not always effective but fully deserved his clean sheet as the Gunners pulled off a famous victory.

Calum Chambers: 7 – Offered a good attacking option and was solid at the back.

Laurent Koscielny: 7 – Would have been crying tears of joy rather than pain after this famous – and completely unexpected – win.

Shkodran Mustafi: 7 – Had one of his better games when it was desperately required. Understandably dropped deeper in the second half as Milan pressed but provided last-gasp tackles and blocks with a thou-shalt-not-pass attitude sadly lacking over the last few games.

Sead Kolasinac: 7 – Another who stepped up in the cauldron of the San Siro to replicate his early season form.

Granit Xhaka: 7 – Still a conundrum but gave his all as the Gunners held on for a famous victory

Aaron Ramsey: 8 – Showed his big-match temperament and taste for the big stage by calmly slotting past Donnarumma to double Arsenal’s lead right on half-time to send the travelling fans into dreamland.

Jack Wilshere: 8 - No-one worked harder even if his efforts were largely unsung as he performed the vital dirty work in the heart of midfield by jockeying, hassling, tirelessly tracking while performing blocks and interceptions.

Henrik Mkhitaryan: 8 – Showed his undoubted talent after a number of disappointing games by cutting in and firing past the highly-rated young Milan keeper Donnarumma. If he could show that every game he would be a world class talent.

Mesut Ozil: 8 – Excellent assist for Mkhitaryan’s goal showed his patchy form since signing a new contract is hopefully just a blip rather than a sign of a deeper malaise. Two goals and four assists in his last six games certainly suggests the former.

Danny Welbeck: 7 – Missed a clear cut chance late in the first half by firing at the keeper even if the angle had closed. Nearly grabbed a third moments after the break after the ball hit him and flew past Donnarumma and narrowly wide.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles: 7 - Battled hard after replacing Kolasinac.

Rob Holding: 7 – The down-to-earth lad from Bolton is a huge Stone Roses fan. He will surely be listening to ‘This is the One’ after playing his part in a glorious triumph after coming on for Ozil to shore up the backline.

Mohamed Elneny: 7 – Came on fora tiring Chambers and helped repel desperate late surges from a shellshocked Milan side.

AC Milan

Gianluigi Donnarumma: 6 – The highly-rated keeper must be wondering what hit him after two Arsenal goals in the first half shocked the team and the entire stadium.

Davide Calabria: 6.5 – Played a good through ball to Bonaventura early in the second half - who should have done better, firing narrowly over.

Leonardo Bonucci: 6 – Looked shellshocked after a difficult first half

Alessio Romagnoli: 6 – Another who was stunned by the Gunners excellent first half performance

Ricardo Rodriguez: 6 – Worked hard in denying space to the Gunners but was another who was overwhelmed by the stunning first half performance from the visitors.

Franck Kessie: 7 – Combined well with his midfield partner Bonaventura but wasn’t as influential as he would have liked to have been.

Lucas Biglia: 6 – Had a game to forget as was nowhere near as effective as he would have liked.

Giacomo Bonaventura: 7 - Dovetailed well with Kessie as the midfield pairing pressured the away team early on but faded in influence as the game wore on. Always in the thick of things even if he wasn’t always effective.

Jesus Joaquin Suso: 5 – For someone having such an impressive season with eight goals and 11 assists from a wide position the former Liverpool player was hugely disappointing. There was little evidence of his trademark trickery from the flank from the Spaniard who has flourished since returning from Genoa on loan two seasons ago.

Patrick Cutrone: 7 - The 20-year-old is enjoying a stellar breakthrough season at the San Siro after netting 14 goals for the club. Perhaps could have made it 15 minutes before Arsenal went ahead but snatched at a chance.

Hakan Calhanoglu: 7 – The 24-year-old German-born Turkish international showed good energy levels early on as he continually powered into the box, disturbing the backline. Showed honesty too by opting not to go down after Ospina rashly challenged him.

Nikola Kalanic: 6 – Battled but unable to influence proceedings

Valente Silver: 5 – On for Cutrone but failed to make a real impact

Borini for Calabria: 5
