South Hampstead’s junior colts manager David Chase hopes more female players will pour into the club when they host their ECB club open day on Saturday.

Last year, 310 clubs took part nationwide, with double the number signed up this season.

South Hampstead are encouraging the community to come to their Milverton Road ground in full force on Saturday to catch the fourth day of the first Test between England and India.

SH have put their own spin on the event, holding a taster session for girls between 10am and 12pm, which is particularly aimed at those between six and 12.

Chase hopes the occasion will help him to fulfil an ambition of being able to field a girls’ team at junior level in the not so distant future.

“I have always been amazed when I do coaching in schools at just how talented some of the girls are, but they don’t have anything after school or away from school for them to foster that talent,” he said.

“I’ve been trying for the last few years to get a girls team going at the club and I think this is a perfect opportunity to do something with regards to that.

“We have had girls come down with their brothers to take part in training but I think it is important for them to have their own team.

“Those without brothers may not be as used to being in a sporting environment but perhaps having a girls- only team would help them get involved in the sport.

“By attracting girls when they are young, hopefully they will develop an attachment with the club and we will be able to eventually put out a senior women’s team. Then when they have children that attachment will help bring new youngsters into the club and we will become more sustainable.”

The ECB club open days, in partnership with Waitrose, is a nationwide initiative that aims to help boost grassroots cricket participation by encouraging cricket clubs to open their pavilion doors and welcome guests from their local community for a day.
