Philipson’s latest wicket haul can’t save Hornsey from defeat

Captain Michael Philipson picked up a clutch of wickets but could not avert a five-wicket defeat that dumped Hornsey back into the relegation fight in the Premier Division of the Middlesex County Cricket League.

Philipson, who is the second highest wicket-taker in the Premier Division, returned figures of 4-32 against Ealing but his side eventually succumbed and slid down to seventh place in the table.

The Hornsey skipper lost the toss at Corfton Road and his side were put in, with Garfield Struthers edging Jack Sheppard (1-26) behind for a golden duck.

James Bull (15) was next to go, falling to Ishan Ratnayake, but Philipson (18) and Paul Weekes appeared to be getting the innings back on track as they reached 46-2.

However, Ealing captain Chris Peploe (5-36) put Hornsey on the back foot as he removed Philipson and followed that up with the wicket of on-loan Northamptonshire batsman Adam Rossington (9).

Chris Glasper (1-13) dismissed James Fleming leg before for a duck and Jack Goldberg (1) became Peploe’s third victim, but Ealing were held up by the dogged resistance of Weekes (35) and Chetan Patel.

Kristian Martin (2-19) accounted for Weekes and Martin Tucker (0) in quick succession, but Patel (30) and Ed Wharton (14) hauled Hornsey to 130, with Peploe dismissing both to wrap up the innings in the 57th over.

However, Hornsey’s modest total began to look vaguely defendable when Philipson made early inroads against the home batting by having Ollie Wilkin (5) caught behind.

Mylo Wilkin followed three balls later, lbw without troubling the scorers to leave Ealing in a precarious position at 6-2, but Damian Shirazi and Rob White dug them out of trouble with a partnership of 69.

Philipson ended that stand by removing White (40) leg before and there was another scare for the home side when David Holt (3) fell to Weekes (1-40).

Philipson then picked up another lbw decision against Luke Stoughton (1) to leave Ealing 100-5, but that was as good as it got and Shirazi (44 not out) and Peploe (24no) saw their side home at 132-5 in the 44th over.
