North London's Millie Pope

North London Cricket Club’s Millie Pope has been selected for an Under-16 England team which will take part in a series of Twenty20 and 40-over matches at Wellington College later this month.

The annual England Women’s Development Programme (EWDP) Under-15 Super 3s competition will run from Monday July 28 to Friday August 1, and involves the top 39 young players split evenly into three teams – the Diamonds, Emeralds and Rubies.

An invitational Under-16 ‘Sapphires’ side will also be taking part in front of the England women’s selectors, and that team includes Pope – the captain of the Middlesex Under-15 girls team.

In addition to competing in two 40-over and two T20 games, the players will also take part in a range of educational workshops focusing on nutrition, strength and conditioning and personal development and welfare.

Pope said: “I’ve had so much backing from North London and it’s helped me develop my game. They are always giving me support, from sessions with the club’s senior coach to getting me into the boys’ league teams for some tough match experience.

“I can’t wait for this tournament with the Under-16 national squad and one day I’d love to pull on an England shirt.”

Martin Issett, the North London girls’ section manager, said: “Our Under-13 and Under-15 girls have had outstanding success at national level over the last two seasons and Millie has shone in a very good team. She is a joy to watch at the crease.”

Pope turned out for NL’s Under-15 boys’ team on Monday evening and she scored 37 in a convincing victory over neighbours Hornsey in a league play-off.

Commenting about the EWDP Under-15 Super 3s competition and its wider significance, ECB head of England women’s cricket Clare Connor said: “The England Women’s Development Programmes at Under-15 and Under-19 underpin the England women’s cricket pathway.

“Both programmes seek to create an environment that challenges and supports our young players to improve as cricketers and develop as people.

“This happens through a wide range of opportunities throughout the year, including a comprehensive winter training schedule, the EWDP U15 and U19 Super 3s competitions, and other matches and festivals during the season.

“The scope of opportunities now available to young female cricketers is greater than ever before – as is the competition for places across the England women’s cricket pathway.”
