I’ve missed a lot more cricket than I would have liked, so it’s a great feeling to be back on the park at last.
With that said, going back to Glamorgan and losing certainly wasn’t in the script! Credit to my old team, they bowled really well and put us under a lot of pressure and we came up short.
That was a big disappointment, as it ended our chances of getting through to the YB40 semi-finals, but everything came together in the next game against Gloucestershire.
Dawid Malan’s knock was magnificent and the way we bowled and fielded was fantastic – it just showed what we’re capable of doing. If we put those sort of performances together regularly, it bodes well for next season.
Ultimately, it’s just about getting off to a good start. We lost a few early games and that put us in a position where we needed to win our last four, which was always going to be difficult.
But the YB40 is a ludicrously hard competition to get through – only one team from a group of seven and the best runners-up. If you don’t get off to a flyer, it’s hard to progress.
The format definitely needs a bit of tweaking, with quarter-finals being played, and hopefully that will change next year.
So for us it’s all about the County Championship. That’s the big one and I think we’ve all had one eye on it for a while.
We’ve gone into the Derbyshire game in a great position and all we can do is keep performing to a high standard and keep ourselves in the mix.
It’s very rare for teams to do well in three competitions throughout the year, but fair play to Northamptonshire for winning the t20 final.
Once you get to finals day, anybody can win it and Northants proved that. They certainly weren’t favourites, but they played some great cricket on the day and they’re on course for a sterling season at the moment.
