Middlesex cricket column: Positive Spin with Ravi Patel

Losing at Notts was a huge disappointment, especially as we dominated the first three days and put ourselves in a great position to win.

There were so many positives early on at Trent Bridge, especially the two big hundreds from Chris Rogers and Eoin Morgan. Chris batted at such a quick pace and really took the attack to their bowlers.

It was a majestic innings and a pleasure to watch – as was Eoin Morgan’s. He was very unlucky to get out and deserved a double hundred.

Knowing the batsmen had put us in a strong position gave all the bowlers a massive confidence boost and Tim Murtagh was exceptional, moving the ball both ways and keeping the pressure on their batsmen.

Even though we couldn’t make Notts follow on, we were still confident of winning the game. But they batted well on the final day and just took it away from us.

Talking of games that ultimately ended in disappointment, I caught a bit of the end of the England against Sri Lanka Test match on Monday and it was enthralling to watch.

Frankly, I didn’t think that kind of finish could be on the cards – the pitch seemed too flat, but the bowlers did so well to take those wickets. I’m just gutted they couldn’t get the final one.

It’s a pity Sam Robson didn’t get many runs, but I’m sure he’ll get many more chances for England and I’m equally sure he’ll take them.

Sam sets himself up to bat for long periods of time, that’s what you need in the Test arena and there’s no reason why he can’t do it there.

Anyway, we have to pick ourselves up and get back to the task of turning our Twenty20 form around.

There’s still optimism, but it’s imperative that we do get a win under our belts. With the players we’ve got, it’s bound to come sooner rather than later.
