Captain Michael Philipson and veteran Paul Weekes bowled Hornsey to their second successive Middlesex County League victory as they triumphed at Twickenham by 74 runs.

Philipson picked up three wickets and Weekes took four to run through Twickenham’s middle and lower order and dismiss them for 209 in reply to the visitors’ total of 283-9.

The Hornsey skipper won the toss and decided to take first knock, but they lost Basil Akram for just six, caught behind off Middlesex seamer Gurjit Sandhu (1-60).

However, Philipson (96) and Garfield Struthers (38) dished out some punishment to the bowlers, adding 90 for the second wicket before the latter edged Rashid Mullahzadah behind.

Weekes (23) helped Philipson advance the total to 170-2, but his downfall at the hands of Mullahzadah (5-66) precipitated a severe collapse as six wickets fell for just 19 runs.

Philipson departed leg before to Mullahzadah, four short of his century, and Jack Goldberg (0) lasted just two balls before suffering a similar fate, while James Fleming (7) was caught behind off Parminder Singh (7).

Jack Bruce (2) and Chetan Patel (4) soon followed, but no 9 Ed Wharton launched a fightback with his defiant 66 not out, a knock that included eight fours and three sixes.

Sandeep Singh (8) helped Wharton to lift Hornsey over the 200-mark and last man Oli Yew (17 not out) also gave sterling support as an unbroken stand of 69 took the visitors to 283-9 from 66 overs.

When Twickenham replied, Philipson (3-56) struck early by removing Eugene Berger (4) and Fleming made it 24-2 with a run-out to dismiss Babar Choudhary (16).

However, the home side looked relatively comfortable as Rhys Davies (50) and Clint McCabe (75) shared a century partnership for the third wicket.

Weekes (4-74) broke that stand with the wicket of Davies and followed that up by trapping Twickenham captain Carlos Nunes (14) lbw, while Jack Bruce (2-21) claimed the prize scalp of McCabe.

With Twickenham now on the back foot, the visitors pressed home their advantage and Philipson and Weekes collected two more wickets apiece as Hornsey completed victory in the 51st over.
