Haringey boys’ team have booked a date at Lord’s after winning a place at the indoor cricket finals of the London Youth Games on March 3.
They earned their place after topping Group Eight at the qualifiers at Harrow Leisure Centre on Saturday, winning both their group matches convincingly, and team manager John Beckett was delighted with his borough’s performance.
“We are really pleased with how the day went,” he said. “We won both games comfortably in the end, although we had a bit of a scare in the first game.
“We were 16-3 and it looked like that could all go wrong but the boys put a score on the board, and went on to bowl the opposition out cheaply.”
Haringey scored 112 runs in their first group game against Enfield, who could only manage 27 runs in reply thanks to some terrific bowling.
Kingston upon Thames also proved no match for the north London side as Haringey went on to win their second match by 95 runs after opening with 121 from 10 overs.
“It was a really good all-round performance. I’m very pleased,” added Beckett.
Next up will be the finals at Lord’s, which Haringey last reached two years ago.
“It will be a fantastic day and a great experience to play at the home of cricket,” said Beckett. “I’m sure the teams will be really strong, we will just look to enjoy it and get as far as we can.”
The girls’ qualifying rounds take place this weekend, with eight more places in the Lord’s finals up for grabs.
